Surf Fishing Hacks: Julie’s Rod-Runner Setup & Pool Noodle Hack

Surf Fishing Hacks: Julie’s Ultimate Rod-Runner Setup

Surf fishing is one of the most rewarding ways to fish, but it is also the toughest on your gear. Between the abrasive sand, the salt spray, and the long walks from the parking lot to the water’s edge, your rods and reels take a beating.

That’s why we were so excited to see this review from our friend and expert angler, Julie Barney. Julie has mastered the art of the “Beach Haul,” and she uses her Rod-Runner to make sure her surf rods arrive at the sand spike in pristine condition.

In this video, Julie breaks down her workflow for a day on the coast. But she didn’t just stop at using the Rod-Runner—she improved it with a brilliant DIY hack!

The “Pool Noodle” Hack: Organize Your Lures on the Go

One of our favorite parts of Julie’s video is her simple yet effective modification. By attaching a small piece of pool noodle (foam) to the side of her Rod-Runner, Julie created a custom lure station.

Why this works for surf fishing:

  • Quick Swaps: When the birds start diving and the bait moves in, you don’t want to be digging through a tackle box. Having your top jigs and spoons stuck into the foam makes for lightning-fast changes.

  • Safety: It keeps sharp treble hooks tucked away and snag-free while you are walking through beach crowds or dunes.

  • Salt Management: Keeping lures out in the open air (but secured) makes it easier to rinse them off with fresh water later.

3 Tips for Using Your Rod-Runner in the Surf

If you’re planning a trip to the beach, follow Julie’s lead to maximize your efficiency:

1. Keep Reels Out of the Sand

The biggest enemy of a spinning reel is sand. The Rod-Runner’s design keeps your reels elevated and off the ground. Even when you set the caddy down to rig up, your expensive gear stays high and dry.

2. One Trip, No Hassle

Carrying a surf rod, a sand spike, a cooler, and a tackle bag is a balancing act. The Rod-Runner allows you to carry 3 to 5 rods in one hand, leaving your other hand free for your heavy gear.

3. Easy Rinsing

After a day in the salt air, everything needs a wash. You can leave your rods right in the Rod-Runner and give the whole setup a fresh-water spray down when you get home. It doubles as a drying rack!
